What do you mean by natural flooring?
When we talk about our natural flooring, we mean the many area rugs and carpets we manufacture using all natural materials. These earth-friendly and people-friendly natural materials come from sustainable sources, like plant fibers. For instance, our seagrass rugs and mountain grass rugs come from sustainable tall reed like plants.
What are Sisal rugs made from and do they come in decorative colors?
Sisal fiber comes from the agave plant. Although the agave is native to Central America, good sources of regulated sisal are African plantations in Tanzania and Kenya.
Sisal fibers are hardwearing and can be woven into an assortment of weave patterns. Sisal area rugs are natural sound absorbers, which makes them ideal for apartment or condo living. They are also naturally fire resistant.
Natural sisal has sheen to it and is usually cream to light yellow in color.
Sisal is easily dyed and comes in an assortment of popular eye-catching colors.

Tip: To protect against mold and mildew, keep natural fiber rugs in well ventilated areas.
What are the differences between seagrass and mountain grass rugs?
Seagrass is grown in saltwater marshes or cultivated in fields that have been flooded with saltwater. The long grass is harvested and dried so it can be woven into a variety of attractive weave patterns.
Seagrass comes in a variety of green hues, from light sage to olive. Seagrass rugs usually have a distinctive hay-like smell at first, which lessens over time.
Mountain grass grows in the highland fields of China. Like seagrass, mountain grass is naturally stain resistant and repels liquids.
Rugs made from mountain grass are not as green in color and they have a waxy wood-like appearance. Colors range from light golden shades to warmer browns.
Below are seagrass and mountain grass rugs in a basket weave style.

What about Jute?
Jute comes from a tall plant that grows in hot wet regions of Bangladesh and India. The fiber is taken from the inner bark of these long stalks.
Traditionally used to make carpet backing, the use of jute in the flooring industry has grown. Many linoleum floor coverings are made using jute.
Natural jute ranges in color from light tans to darker browns and these color variations are what give natural jute area rugs a distinctive look.
Jute area rugs can be dyed into lively colors and make great decorative accent rugs for bedrooms and low traffic areas in the home or office.
I love the look and texture of bamboo. Are bamboo rugs hard to care for?
Bamboo rugs are very easy to care for. A damp cloth or mop is all that is needed for occasional cleaning.
For outdoor use, make sure that your bamboo rug is not exposed to direct sunlight for long periods of time or it will fade.
The main thing to remember about bamboo rugs is that they can be scratched. To prevent scratching, put protective felt pads on chairs and table legs.
What about backing materials? Can I be sure my area rug will stay in place?
Our sisal rugs, seagrass and mountain grass rugs are backed with non-slip latex. Not only does latex keep area rugs anchored in place, it helps with cleaning. Dirt that gets trapped under a rug can act like sandpaper on your floors. Latex backing traps the dirt so it can easily be vacuumed.
Jute backing is used on our wool and sisal blend area rugs, which like latex backing protects floor surfaces. Our bamboo rugs are backed with felt to help hold them in place and to protect the surface from scratching.
We always recommend a rug pad for extra non-slip safety and to extend the life of your area rugs.
Will the area rug I order look exactly like the sample?
Each area rug you order from Import Flooring is a one-of-a-kind Mother Nature original.
Your area rug will always be somewhat unique because of the color variations caused by natural growing conditions. Naturally woven floor coverings will often have irregular weave patterns, as well.
So, although your area rug will not be a fiber-by-fiber replica of your sample, most people agree that this adds to the distinctive beauty of an all natural area rug.
What is the best size for an area rug?
There really isn’t a one size fits all for area rugs.
Choosing the size of your area rug will depend on several things:
- Shape and size of the room
- The function you want the rug to have
- Personal preference
- Budget considerations
Area rugs can be used to delineate different areas in an open floor plan. In a sitting room, you may want the chairs and sofa to border the area rug.
To create a cozy conversational area, a floor plan can help. Try several different arrangements with the same sized area rug, so that in the future you can move pieces and re-arrange furniture for a fresh look.
Can natural fiber be used for wall to wall covering and is it easy to install?
Sisal, Seagrass, Mountain grass and Wool/Sisal blends all create beautiful wall to wall looks.
Having said that, installation procedures are somewhat different than with synthetic carpet installations. Look for a professional carpet installer who has experience working with natural products.
What is different about maintaining natural flooring and what can I expect?
Earth friendly natural fiber area rugs have variable characteristics, which is something you won’t find with synthetic rugs and carpets.
Here’s what you can expect:
- A few plugs. During manufacturing, fibers are tied off at random points.
- Jute rugs might have slight weave irregularities.
- Loop sizes and bowing variations can occur.
- Color dyed natural fibers can fade over time. To preserve your rugs colors avoid placing them in direct sunlight.
Important maintenance tip: To avoid problems with mold and mildew, keep your natural area rugs away from high humidity or damp conditions.

A thorough cleaning of the covering is recommended every six months, or once a year, depending on traffic received.
Vacuuming
Proper vacuuming requires both suction and brushing action. Either an upright or canister type vacuum cleaner can be used. For best results, vacuum from different directions making several passes over the area.
Heavy traffic areas require the most attention and should receive regular vacuuming to reduce soil build-up and prolong the beauty and life of the carpet.
For hand-tufted rugs such as wool and shag, you should go over your carpet regularly using an upright vacuum cleaner that has beater-bar action (but no teeth or combs). For everyday cleaning, simply shake the rug to remove loose dirt and fluff pile.
Always refer to care tags attached to your rugs for specific instructions.
Removing spills and stains
If possible, clean up a spill immediately after it occurs. If it is a liquid spill, blot up as much as you can with a clean, undyed cloth, pressing firmly all around the spill to absorb as much of the liquid as possible. If the material is solid, scrape up what you can with a spoon or spatula. Dampen cloth with the proper cleaning agent for the type of stain. Wipe the area gently, working from the outer edge to the center of the spot. Turn the cloth frequently so it is always clean, and do not saturate the carpet or get it excessively wet. Repeat this process until the spot is removed. Dry the carpet by weighing down a pad of absorbent tissues or cloth to absorb the moisture, then circulate with a fan or hair dryer.
- For spot-cleaning, use a mixture of water with a very small amount of detergent (such as a neutral one used for hand-washed garments) or a household solvent.
- Use as little cleaner as possible to avoid excessive wetting which may damage the carpet.
- Removing stains with color in them may require extra effort, and some stains containing dyes such as ink, lipstick, paint or shoe polish may be impossible to remove.
- If you are unable to remove a stain, consult a professional carpet cleaner .
Cleaning
If possible, rotate your rug every six months, to change the traffic pattern on the surface of rug.
Should your floor coverings require a total cleaning, it is important to insure that a cleaning method using hot water extraction or wet shampooing should NOT be used. These methods can cause shrinkage and staining of natural fibers. For an overall cleaning it is best to consult a professional who has experience with Natural Fiber Floor covering.
Professional dry extraction methods of cleaning are recommended.
With proper maintenance and care your Natural Floor Coverings will remain beautiful and functional for years. However, be aware that natural fibers may not be the best choice for every condition. Also, the responsibility for cleaning and maintaining lies with those who perform the task. These cleaning and maintenance guidelines provide a practical guideline to keeping the floor covering looking its best. No warranty is expressed or implied.
